Friend, heyyy. Did July feel 'specially looong to ya too?
Mindcha, was all in good spirits for me. I accomplished a lot... Been travelin' a lot... Still am... Done so, so much 'n' still got plenty of summer left to enjoy!
First half of July, it was all Art Fighin' for me. Hustled real good drawin' sum nice character moments for my fighter buds. They all own a piece of Aba Style now, 'n' the excited reactions sounded like I'd captured fittin' moments for their characters.
I received sum bonkers cool art too! Big happy Aba hugs to all of ya who drew sumthin' for me! I'm in it for the love of giftin', tho can't deny 'em pleasant fuzzies when I see my characters in yer hands~
So, thanks a bunch! I'll legit treasure every 'n' each piece forever.
Then started my travelin' spree, on the 18th. If first half was nothin' but artin', then the latter one was no artin' at all. Gonna be like dat for good 5 weeks in fact.
(Unless a really urgent inspiration strikes in the middle... Then mayyybe I'll whip out my artin' app for li'l bit, haha...)
Artin', it's my obsession man. Ya might've known that already tho. When ya don't catch me busy with adult responsibility stuff, ya'll find me at my artin' station.
But once in a while, I need to take a good long break from it. 'Cause if I don't, I'd get stuck to a lane, so to say. I'd keep doin' things the same way, 'n' forget to question if I oughta change sumthin' at sum point.
So: Stop doin' 'n' get away. Let the obsession-shaped void sit there in the soul. Do other stuff, get bored, start thinkin', see new angles.
After all dat, jus' try 'n' return to the same old lane. I sure can't!
With artin' outta the picture, I've been fillin' my artin'-shaped void with comics literature. Specifically Ph.D. Neil Cohn's stuff. Dude's made his career studyin' sequential art from a linguist's perspective, 'n' argues that drawings're as much a language as any spoken 'n' signed languages.
Visual language.
That's sum fascinatin' angle man. I'll tell ya why: As a graphic design 'n' communication nerd, I've always been mindful of makin' my illustrations easy to “read”. I don't mean text or sound effects. I mean the artwork itself. Composition, body language, expressions, focus points, directin' the eye, etc...
'N' now I've a linguistics dude here tellin' me that the thing I do, 'em visuals, the art, is indeed language? Don't that sound like a fresh viewpoint to visual arts or what??
The old lane sure ain't gonna be possible after this deep dive!
